What it takes to be a positive role model

When I heard that this year's International Men's Day theme is 'positive male role models', I immediately thought of our EMEIA EYwavespace leader, Mat Record
As a father of 3 girls, Mat is used to being 'outnumbered' by women. But being a 'girl-dad' isn't the main reason why 12 out of 14 people in our team are female.
Here some of the reasons why Mat is such a good positive role model and ally for women:
If someone else on his team can lead the meeting, or host the panel, Mat will not only step aside, but actively suggest that he is replaced. It's a simple but impactful gesture that indicates his trust in his team members.
Many a time we have been discussing a list of speakers for a workshop, or content experts with our clients and Mat has said: "I couldn't help notice that all these people are men" sparking a positive discussion about how to ensure we have representative voices in the room.
Although flexible working is for all, it impacts women the most. I'm not just talking about being able to work from home. I've never been so able to balance my family life with work as I have in Mat's team. We've had many a productive call while I've been in the school pick up queue. He's covered for me when I've had to leave to pick up a sick child, and whenever a baby appears on a team call, he melts with joy.

Part of this openness about family life is that Mat will contribute himself. We were all joyful when we found out about his daughter getting accepted into University, and his out of office recently mentioned that he was celebrating his wedding anniversary.
I've written before about how vulnerability is a strength. Mat will be the first to admit when he's gotten something wrong, or offended someone. His openness to learn and discuss the perspectives of others attracts team members to share on a deeper level, and Mat will share his learnings sensitively, and openly with others.
Doing all of the above is natural to Mat, which creates an space for inclusivity. No subject is 'off the table' or avoided in our team calls, and we feel safe to challenge him and each other on a range of topics.
Mat will always say how proud he is to have such strong, powerful women on his team. It takes a positive role model to amplify us in the way he does time and time again.
Thank you Mat, and all the positive male role models in my life.
