India's Diabetes Epidemic: Causes, Consequences, and Call to Action
India is facing a serious public health crisis - diabetes. As revealed in the global burden of disease report, unhealthy eating is the number one cause of death worldwide. This is a shocking and uncomfortable truth.
In Indian cities, 3 out of 4 adults are either diabetic or prediabetic. Additionally, 10% of Indian children as young as age 5 are already prediabetic. These statistics are staggering and require urgent action.
Diabetes rates have skyrocketed in India over the past few decades. When the speaker was in kindergarten, the diabetes rate was 1.5%. By the time she graduated from college, it was 5%. Today, it stands at over 11%. Over 100 million Indians currently live with diabetes and 136 million more have prediabetes.
Indians tend to develop diabetes much earlier than Westerners, often in their peak working years. This poses a major threat to India's economic outlook unless confronted head-on. Diabetes also leads to disabling and life-threatening complications like heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and amputations.
The good news is that 80% of type 2 diabetes can be prevented through lifestyle changes - eating healthy, exercising regularly and avoiding tobacco. Behavior change is key. Diabetes is largely preventable if we take action.
Our overburdened healthcare system cannot deliver preventative care to the masses. We need community-based solutions. The speaker's organization, Arogya World, uses a "doorstep health model" to promote healthy living where people live, work and study. This model has already reached 12.5 million Indians across rural and urban areas.
The "Arogya City" concept brings different stakeholders together to tangibly improve health indicators for a specific number of city residents over 2 years. A pilot was successful in Bangalore last year. Other cities can adopt this collaborative, multipronged approach to tackling issues like diabetes through awareness, behavior change, and community action.
Together, we can unbox wellness through small daily choices - eating half a plate instead of a whole mountain, denying that extra spoonful of sugar, and using mobile tech to scale diabetes prevention programs. Our health extends beyond clinic walls, into our kitchens and dinner tables. The time to act is now.
