What is Surge Rope?
Surge rope, It has a funny name, but the product got its name due to the application of catching the surge. So, what is surge rope? Surge rope is a fiberglass rope that is used in electric motors primarily to anchor each form coil to the next. This provides strength and stability to the coils and keeps them from flexing during the inrush of power that ignites the magnetic pull of the armature in the motor. Surge rope comes in two separate styles, dry surge rope and B-stage.
Dry surge rope is exactly what it sounds like, it’s a dry rope or untreated rope comprised of texturized fiberglass core with a fiberglass overbraid, including the option of an aramid fiber core. These ropes are designed to be used in a VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation) systems but can also be used in a varnish dip and bake. The untreated fiberglass version is rated as Class C (over 240°C), but the end user rating will depend on the resin used for vacuum impregnation. Typically the class rating will take on the temperature class rating of the resin.
B-Stage surge ropes or treated ropes are essentially pre-impregnated ropes. The B-stage product is constructed using a core of glass yarns which have been impregnated with thermosetting modified polyester resins or epoxy resin systems and are rated from Class N 180?C up to Class H 220 ?C depending on the resin used. The B-Stage core is overbraided with a spun polyester fiber encapsulating the core.
Surge Ropes are recommended for use as replacements for both steel and laminated fiberglass surge rings, spacers on DC armatures, winding head supports on random wound (mush coils) machines, and support systems for the nose sections of AC form wound coils.
