What are supported internships?

Supported internships are to enable young people with additional needs to embark on a programme at an employer to learn the skills needed for work, through learning in the workplace. The internships enable young people (aged 16-24) with an Education, Health and Care plan, or a statement of SEN to achieve sustainable paid employment by being equipped with these key skills. The supported internships last for a minimum of 6-months and are unpaid. However, wherever possible the young people should be moved into paid employment at the end of the programme. As well as on-the-job experience of working, the young person will complete a personalised study programme which will often include the chance to study for relevant qualification, and maths and English if appropriate.

DFN Project Search work with employers across the UK to enable young people to embark on an amazing opportunity. Only 1/20 people with additional needs currently are in paid employment, but support internships is helping to give young people with additional needs the opportunity to enter paid employment.
