What are the 'Sunday Scaries?' Chances are you experience them every weekend.

Are you living for the weekends? Since the beginning of the modern-day 9 to 5, Monday to Friday work schedule, workers have dragged their way through the week to get to the weekend - time to rest, reset, and enjoy doing what you enjoy. What happens when those two days of peace are coming to a close? Introducing, the Sunday Scaries.

The term 'Sunday Scaries' has risen in popularity during the past few years, during a time of quiet quitting and high levels of burnout. Headspace defines it as 'feelings of anxiety or dread that happen the day before heading back to work.' A 2018 survey?commissioned by LinkedIn found that 80 percent of working American adults worry about the upcoming workweek on Sundays. This feeling is nothing new - and it can affect even those who love their jobs the most.

While there will likely be no cure for the Sunday Scaries, we can offer some coping mechanisms to make Sunday evening dread a little more manageable.

1. Take your week day-by-day, and handle things as they come.

We often feel intimidated by a long list of tasks presented to us at the start of the week. Try to focus on the tasks that require your attention on Monday only. This may require you to create an agenda on the prior Friday for your upcoming week to ensure you will be able to complete all tasks prior to their deadlines. Remember, an hour of planning can save you hours of doing - or worrying.

2. Be Present!

Sometimes you have to remind yourself to be in the moment! If it's Sunday night, you still have an entire night before going back to work. Enjoy the time away from work and be present on your weekend. Try using a notebook to write down the things that you are anxious or stressed about, and use your notes to remind yourself of high-priority items on Monday morning.

3. Be Open With Coworkers About Your Availability and Obligations

Are your coworkers sending endless weekend and late-night emails? Communicate with your coworkers about your available hours and set boundaries. Do not disturb or airplane mode is a great way to disconnect from your phone and be present at the moment.

4. Look For Change

Do you dread another week that felt the same as the 52 weeks prior? Sometimes change can benefit us by providing stimulation and challenge. Taking on new responsibilities, working from a different location, or finding a new role or workplace are all ways to spice up your workdays. However, consider your long-term goals and ensure these changes align with them.
