What Sue Taught Me ~ MY tribute to Sue Buswell
Michelle Young
Consumer Housing Advocate/Industry Advisor ?? "Get's it". Done. Consumer advocacy for sustainable, national housing policy reform.
What are we really, if not a collection of the experiences we make? Those who remain after we are gone mourn our passing. What is this exactly? This "passing" of which we speak? What is it that causes such grief?
At the end of the day, I suspect that it's the loss of someone who loved us - someone who cared.
Sue was a credit expert. I don't use this term lightly. "Expert". This is a distinction given to those who are not only knowledgeable but constantly seek to refine this knowledge while practicing accessibility and applicability of the knowledge. Her rank was undeniable. There are many credit experts in the industry. Yet, these individuals are not known to me.
Sue was known by many. She cared to be. She gave her knowledge selflessly. Without demand for compensation or adoration. Her self-produced videos, shot from the corner of her manufactured home she shared with her husband and not-so-gracefully aging and beloved dog brought humanity to the sub-human process of quantifying the sum total of one's collection of life experiences and subsequent decisions into a solitary, lone number. An "empirically-driven" score on one's value as a human.
Sue really did Know the Score. She knew that it was all a game. And she wanted us to win.
Perhaps this is what we grieve. Someone who believed. That we are worthy -- that we are capable. Someone who believed that we could - and should win. And invested in the outcome.
I ask myself. In what lies ahead for us, without her.......... What would Sue want us to do? After much thought, I arrive at a solitary conclusion. More than anything.? She would want us to understand.
Afterall, she taught us all - that knowing the score requires knowing the model. As mothers, fathers, sons and daughters - brothers and sisters - we are the models of earth's humanity. More than anything. Sue would want us to understand - one another. So that we might win. As individuals and a collective.
That's what Sue taught me.

~Special thanks to Brian Vieaux and Molly Dowdy. Brian, thank you for preventing me from being blindsided by the loss of our friend. I'm forever grateful. Molly - thank you for providing the platform in NEXT (pictured here) that would be the start of my friendship with Sue B and for providing this pic - the only one I have of us together. What a gift.
Much love and gratitude to all.
