What Is Success? Let's Define It

What Is Success? Let's Define It

How do you define success?  Everyone sees success differently.  For some, success is directly tied to how happy you feel about your life.  For others, success is equal to how much money you have in the bank.

But is there a one-size-fits-all definition for success?

I tend to think of success as multi-faceted.  You can’t focus on one aspect and exclude the other.  For example, you may be successful in getting clients but not keeping them.  True success is completing the circle, not reaching your goal in one part of your life but failing in the other.

In this post, I’m going to take an analytical view and talk about success in terms of which actions almost always lead to it.  While your definition of success may differ from the next person, the following actions will always lead you towards a positive outcome in your life.  Let’s get to it.

The Actions that Lead to Success:

Seeing opportunities and taking them

Always keep your eyes open for chances to grow your business.  That could mean one client at a time or through forging mutually beneficial partnerships with other businesses.

Feeling the fear and doing it anyway

You will get cold feet, you will feel afraid, you won’t want to put yourself out there for fear of failing-- but do it anyway.  Success comes to those who have the courage to go down the uncharted path.

Recovering quickly from your mistakes

While on your uncharted path, you will fall along the way.  You may get bruised and beat up.  But, success always rewards those that get up, dust themselves off, and try again.

Building a team of passionate people around you

The most successful people are surrounded by other successful people-- people who are passionate about their jobs. Only hire people that make you better.  Don’t just hire “good enough.”

Knowing how to delegate

You can’t have a rockstar team and then not delegate to them.  Give the team the freedom and ability to do what they do best and it’ll free you up to do the same.

Staying focused on your goals

What are the goals you have for your business?  What about other areas of your life-- exercise, family life, hobbies? Write down all of your goals and keep them in a highly visible spot that you can see daily.

Making sacrifices now

Before success arrives, you’ll have to roll up your sleeves and log some serious hours in the shadows. That’s okay. It’ll all pay off eventually. But remember that success requires a tax of hard work.

Final Thoughts

Success is never guaranteed, but there are certain activities that can definitely build up to it. Hope that helps. Until next time!

The fear of failure has always bugged me. I know it will be ok if I fail, but actually failing makes me nervous. I think that is why I always start things and never finish them. I have great ideas and the drive is always there at the beginning but then I get to a point where I'm like... OK, now what? Is it good enough or should I sit down and sent out those 300 emails.
