Research shows that focusing on strengths is the key to unlocking employee performance and well-being.

What is Strengths-Based Performance Management?

A Strengths-Based Performance Management approach is a way of managing employee performance that focuses on identifying and building upon their strengths, rather than solely addressing their weaknesses. This approach involves understanding the unique strengths and talents of each employee and leveraging those strengths to improve their performance and achieve organisational goals. It encourages positive feedback and recognition of accomplishments, and provides opportunities for employees to further develop their strengths.

However, that doesn't mean that weaknesses should be ignored entirely. There are ways to address employee development areas within a strengths-based approach.

Overall, the goal of a strengths-based approach is to create a more positive and productive work environment by focusing on what employees do well and leveraging those strengths to achieve success.

What is the data telling us:

There is a growing body of research that supports the use of strengths-based approaches in performance management. Here are some key findings:

  1. Strengths-based approaches can improve engagement and motivation: A study by Gallup found that employees who had managers who focused on their strengths were significantly more engaged and less likely to leave their jobs than employees who had managers who focused on their weaknesses.
  2. Focusing on strengths can lead to better performance: A study by the Corporate Leadership Council found that when managers focused on employee strengths, rather than weaknesses, employees were more likely to be high performers.
  3. Strengths-based approaches can increase well-being: A study by the University of Warwick found that employees who were encouraged to use their strengths at work reported higher levels of well-being and lower levels of stress.
  4. Employees prefer strengths-based approaches: A survey by the Society for Human Resource Management found that employees preferred managers who focused on their strengths, rather than their weaknesses.

The evidence suggests that strengths-based performance management can be a highly effective approach, leading to improved engagement, motivation, performance, and well-being.

Totally agree Mariana. I’m a big user of the Strengths Finder tool in my career coaching for this reason. If you find ways of showcasing your strengths then you’ll more often than not go further and faster in your career.
