What is in a street name? Some thoughts on Memorial Day.

When most people move into a new home, they are not particularly interested in the origin of the street name. That is slightly different when the street name starts with a military rank and surname. My family and I moved into Capt Faldermeyer Ct earlier this year. As a former military officer of the same rank, I was curious to understand the namesake that we would reference so often as friends and family asked where we moved.
As I would come to learn, CPT Harold "Hank" Faldermeyer was killed in action in Vietnam in May 1972 at the young age of 24. He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for "extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as Advisor, 2d Battalion, 32d Regiment, 21st Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam."
He is amongst the 58,000+ killed in action during the Vietnam conflict. Some left behind families and some never had the opportunity to start a family. That fact is never lost on me. I am deeply grateful for their sacrifice and mindful enough to not take my life for granted. On this Memorial Day and every time I reference where I live, your memory lives on.

3 年Thanks for encouraging me and hopefully others to dig a little deeper in first recognizing our service members who lost their lives. I feel the individual recognition helps shine a light on the more overarching sentiments and broad strokes of honoring our heroes or commemorating the fallen soldiers who uphold our freedoms. Nice post Tim Denman
