What stories are you telling yourself that are causing you to hold yourself back?
This question is weighing quite deeply on me today. Often the stories we tell ourselves are not even our own. They are a mishmash of other people's misperceptions and expectations that they have placed on us.
They are exchanged via backhanded compliments, scoffs of disbelief, expressions of concern, and disparaging looks when you express your goals.
Before you realise they slide into your psyche so smoothly that before you even know it you have accepted the narratives that you cannot be, do and have all that you desire as your own.
If like me you are from a respectable Caribbean family you are taught to absorb the insults, remain polite, and adopt the position of whatever picture you have been painted to be. Remain silent, do not rock the boat. Keep it moving.
But what if you wake up one day and realise that all your hopes and dreams of success are passing you by? A prisoner trapped in the perception of no or low expectations gleaned from other people's thoughts.
Why should you leave your dreams and the life you envisioned for yourself behind? I see too many people do this in their careers. They became accepting of the lots placed on them. Frozen in fear of losing what they have. Frozen in fear of not being good enough and what if it does not work out.
I did too until it just became unbearable and unacceptable. I decided to tell myself stories of hope, joy and possibilities. I recognised that to step into another lane there had to be an exchange. That was to leave behind the version of me that was accepting of not being good enough and not having enough behind.
