What Stories Do You Tell Yourself?
One of the most transformative questions I pose to my clients is, "What are the stories you tell yourself?" This query is revelatory for many, revealing the narrative that shapes their world. Intriguingly, many find that their current realities mirror these deeply held narratives.
Let's delve deeper. For years, a recurring story in my psyche was: “I need a monthly salary to maintain my lifestyle, without which I'd be depressed.” Sure, this belief system shielded me from many uncertainties. It granted me lifestyle perks, societal standing, and a sense of identity. But, like any story, it came with its shadows. It bred a fear of stepping out, confined me within invisible walls, and sometimes left me grappling with the imposter syndrome.
But herein lies a more profound inquiry: Should the stories we tell ourselves always propel us into uncharted territories? While familiar tales bring comfort, new narratives can spur growth. However, the danger lies in the slippery slope of convincing oneself of anything and everything. Such unchecked rationalisations can blur our vision, leading to self-deception. This is where the echo chambers of our design come into play, distorting reality and stymying genuine progress.
In life's vast narrative landscape, not every tale must be an epic saga of battling dragons or crossing tumultuous seas. Yet, they should be authentic, challenging our status quo and pushing our boundaries just enough to keep the horizon ever-expanding. The true art is in striking a balance, crafting stories that encourage us without letting us get lost in our fiction.
