What is a standby in a film?
A standby is an individual who is specifically hired to replace the lead and will not be in any aspect of the show unless called to be so.
The standby is an actor whose only job is to cover one specific track (generally a lead) - they have no other tracks (i.e. during a regular performance with no one out, they will not perform). If the principal calls out of a show, they’re first in line to take over. Note that not all productions have standbys - usually only productions with particularly demanding, either physically or vocally (or both) lead tracks have them.
This person is hired specifically to replace the lead and is not otherwise in the show.
