SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates encrypt the communication between a user's browser and a server, protecting data sent over the internet. SSL certificates come in a variety of forms, each meeting a distinct purpose and level of validation. The primary kinds are as follows:
Domain Validated (DV) Certificates:
Purpose: Basic level of validation.
Verification: Validates the domain ownership.
Usage: Suitable for small websites, blogs, and non-commercial sites.
Issuance Time: Minutes to a few hours.
Organization Validated (OV) Certificates:
Purpose: Medium level of validation.
Verification: Validates the domain ownership and the organization's identity.
Usage: Suitable for business and commercial websites.
Issuance Time: 1-3 days.
Extended Validation (EV) Certificates:
Purpose: Highest level of validation.
Verification: Thorough validation of the domain ownership, organization, and legal entity.
Usage: Suitable for e-commerce, banking, and high-profile websites.
Issuance Time: 1-5 days.
Special Feature: Displays the organization’s name in the browser’s address bar.
Wildcard Certificates:
Purpose: Secure multiple subdomains under a single domain.
Verification: Can be DV or OV.
Usage: Suitable for websites with many subdomains (e.g., blog.yashwant.com, buy.yashwant.com).
Notation: Uses an asterisk (*) to denote subdomains (e.g., *.yashwant.com).
Multi-Domain (SAN) Certificates:
Purpose: Secure multiple domain names with a single certificate.
Verification: Can be DV, OV, or EV.
Usage: Suitable for businesses managing multiple websites or services under different domains.
