What sort of support do I need? What are the various types of Services?
Part 3 of "What is this Coaching Thing Anyway?" by Chris Renner and TruNorth Coaching and Business Advisory Services
Realizing that you want help and asking for It, are big steps in any solution finding search. ?Figuring out what kind of help you need may be overwhelming with many terms used interchangeably in our conversations creating confusion, which can add to the frustration of both searching for help and potentially not gaining the help you truly need.??
Today’s aim is to provide some guidelines for you to help clarify the available services.? There are as infinite number of diagrams and descriptions out there as there are questions so as simply as I can frame it up:
There are 4 key services you can go to for Business, Personal or “Life” situations and all will add value to the right area. ?A few simple matrixes help simplify this discussion, as I find “Coach” and “Mentor” interchanged often in conversations, it will be used as the key example today (These are not meant to be all encompassing and please do your own research as I am sure there will be opinions on the high-level summaries here).
There are two fundamental differentiators to the services (1) Are you dealing with the past or looking to the future? (2) ?Are we looking to solve a systemic problem or look to look to develop goals and solutions for the future? The methods used will be different based on your needs/desires.
1.???? Therapists:?The focus is on an individual’s past and focuses on potential impacts of trauma and/or emotional conflicts or problems and the healing of that pain.? They will most likely employ Medical or Clinical approach.?
2.???? Consultant/Corporate Training: The focus is usually on a corporate structure, process or industry problem that has become unmanageable due to past results.? They are experts in their field whose mandate to create solutions to the problem for you and tell/instruct you on how to implement or execute the solution.
3.???? Coaches: The focus in on the present, helping individual’s take personal accountability for creating action plans toward positive development and solutions for the future.? There is an understanding one Personal and work, lives are intertwined and need to exist in balance. ?There is a partnership to create goals by the individual to develop new skills, habits, behaviours and measures to ensure they achieve their desired outcome.? The approach is structed with clear meeting timing, cadence and duration.?

4.???? Mentors:?The focus is also on the present to create outcomes for the future.? The relationship is usually between a Jr. and more Sr./qualified subject matter expert.? There is more use of advice, knowledge transfer and providing direction toward solutions that have worked for the mentor in the past based on their experience.?? The relationship is usually longer term, more informal structure, but still focused on the individual’s development.?
