The importance of trust in any negotiation cannot be understated. Whether you are negotiating a multi-million dollar contract or a simple agreement between two parties, your success depends in large part on how much the other side trusts you. Trust allows both sides of the negotiation table to be candid about their needs, interests, and desires, leading to a more cooperative and productive negotiation process.
But how do you build trust during a negotiation? Here are several strategies:
Establish rapport
Building rapport is key in a negotiation. People are more likely to trust someone they like and get along with. Make sure you establish a personal connection early in the negotiation process by engaging in small talk and asking about the other side's interests.?
Remember: people don't just do business with those they trust, they also do business with those they like.
Be transparent
People are naturally suspicious when they don't know what the other side is up to. So make a point to communicate openly and honestly about your objectives throughout the negotiation. Be clear about what you hope to achieve and what you are, and are not, willing to concede. When the other side knows what you want, they are more likely to trust that you are negotiating in good faith.
Keep your word
One of the quickest ways to erode trust during a negotiation is to break a promise. So make sure to keep your word, no matter how small the promise may seem. If you say, for example, you are going to provide the other side with an updated contract by a certain date, keep to that timeline. If you need more time, communicate this early on and set a new deadline.?

Demonstrating you're reliable early on in the negotiation process will go a long way in building trust.
Listen and show empathy
Really listening to the other side and showing you understand their perspective can help build trust. This means not just hearing what the other side is saying, but really understanding where they are coming from.?
Expressing curiosity and empathy can establish a connection and help build trust. And it goes both ways: when the other side feels heard and understood, they are more willing to hear and understand your side, too.
Avoid aggressive tactics
If you really want to establish trust, it is important to avoid aggressive tactics. These can undermine your credibility and damage your relationship with the other side. For example, avoid employing the "take it or leave it" strategy or stonewalling, where you refuse to budge on an issue. Instead, work together to find solutions that can benefit both sides. This collaborative approach will help demonstrate that you are acting in good faith and can be trusted.

1 年The most effective way to build trust in a negotiation is to demonstrate clear and decisive behavior. Both you and the other individual are aware that negotiation is taking place. Avoiding speech that draws out critical elements of the discussion or may seem misleading is key to moving the conversation forward. The goal is to drive progression through tiny agreements along the way. Establishing and expressing what you want, your understanding of their positions, and outlining some commitments you will be willing to make can help successfully build rapport and trust. Success in negotiating is not one side getting what they want and the other side sacrificing what they want. A successful negotiation is measured by the agreement between parties that allows for the formation, transaction, or separation. Without an agreement that concludes the discussion, it is a failed negotiation. Expressing an understanding of this upfront will help to express a desire to find a resolution through openness and compromise.
