What is Social Recruiting???

Alright, you glorious bunch of Recruiter-Lifers, welcome back to another edition of The Recruiter Life Chronicles - your favourite newsletter that's like a pint with your mates but with fewer hangovers and more wisdom. This time, we’re diving into the depths of Social Recruiting. Yes, that thing you pretend to know all about when your boss asks what you’ve been up to. Spoiler alert: it could actually help you make more money.

The Social Recruiting Lowdown: What’s All the Fuss About?

Let’s not beat around the bush here: social recruiting is just a posh term for stalking candidates on social media. But before you start thinking it’s just about liking a few posts and sliding into someone’s DMs (and no, I’m not talking about your Friday night shenanigans), it’s time to level up. Done right, social recruiting can take your billings from “I’m just about covering rent” to “I might finally get that holiday to Ibiza.”

Tip #1: Be the Sherlock Holmes of LinkedIn

First off, if you’re still using LinkedIn like it’s 2010, where you send a connection request with a generic “Hi, I see we have mutual connections,” stop it. You’re better than that. Dive deep. LinkedIn is a goldmine for digging up what people are really like, not just what they say in interviews. Find out who their colleagues are, what they’re posting about, and if they have a penchant for motivational quotes (pro tip: avoid those ones; they’re too positive to leave their current job).

Tip #2: It’s All About the Brand, Baby

If your LinkedIn profile still reads like a CV from the 90s, you’ve got some work to do. You’re not just a recruiter; you’re a brand. And your brand should scream, “I can get you the best job with the least amount of hassle, and we might even have a laugh along the way.” Inject some personality into your posts. Crack a joke, share a meme or tell a funny story about the time you almost placed a candidate who thought “remote working” meant he could work from his bed in his pyjamas (oh wait, that’s all of us now).

Tip #3: Slide into Those DMs (Professionally, Of Course)

Once you’ve found your target, it’s time to make your move. But please, for the love of all things holy, don’t just send a message saying, “Hi, I have a role you might be interested in.” You might as well start with “Dear Sir/Madam.” No one wants that. Instead, be human. Reference something from their profile, make a joke, or tell them why this role will make them the talk of the virtual office. Make them feel like you actually care about their career, not just your commission.

Tip #4: Use Social Proof to Seal the Deal

Nothing sells better than a bit of social proof. If you’ve got testimonials from happy candidates, plaster them all over your profile like a peacock showing off its feathers. People want to know that you’re not just a recruiter but the recruiter who can get them the job that makes their friends jealous. You know, the one with the “unlimited holiday” (LOL, as if that’s a real thing) and the office dog called Biscuit.

Tip #5: Stay Relevant, Stay Visible

Don’t be that recruiter who only pops up when you’ve got something to sell. Be visible, be relevant, and engage with your network regularly. Share industry news, comment on posts, and for heaven’s sake, don’t just share links without adding your two pence worth. Remember, social recruiting isn’t just about finding candidates; it’s about building relationships. And relationships mean referrals, and referrals mean… wait for it… more billings.

The Final Word: Social Recruiting Isn’t Just a Fad

So, there you have it, social recruiting isn’t just a buzzword thrown around by people trying to sound clever on LinkedIn. It’s a real game-changer. Get it right, and you’ll be swimming in billings like Scrooge McDuck in his money vault (minus the whole diving headfirst into coins bit - don’t try that at home). Get it wrong, and you’ll just be another recruiter lost in the noise.

Now go forth, be bold, be funny, and for crying out loud, stop using “I hope you’re well” as an opener.

Until next time, keep it social and keep it real.

Cheers, The Recruiter Life Team

Great article! I would agree with most of what you said. I would add that to know your audience still applies here. Be careful not to get too cute with prospects who may not like the cutesy stuff. Studying your prospect will help keep it real! Best to you all!

I agree with staying relevant and using quotes from the candidate you desire to convert, I'm all for staying relevant and using quotes from the candidate you're trying to win over. It's like quoting Shakespeare to convince your cat to let you sleep in on weekends!
