What social really means...

What social really means...

Last night, we were fortunate to participate in People's Prep and their student networking event. Students at this Newark, NJ charter school (and our first customer) are part of an internship program and the goal of this event was to give them a chance to practice their social skills and speak with some of Newark's business community.

The students were thoughtful and it was easy to see how much they appreciated the opportunities of this event and what the school does for them. These kids are tough (and I'd have to think that some of their lives are not the best), but after peeling back the first shell, they opened up, were honest and had a great time. Ultimately, all the social media in the world can not have the same impact of an in-person event, where you get to look these kids in the eye, read their body language and get to know them a little better. We are delighted to work with such a progressive school that is working hard to prepare them for the future workforce.

Quick observations. Not only did I love the drive of these students (they were asking for the sale!) but they were so interested in mobile and technology. It's refreshing because part of our goal is to drive ubiquity of information and an improved education experience through channels like mobile - regardless of location or socio-economic conditions. We know that it can only be a vehicle and much more needs to be done around people, process and training. But if the kids speak and show interest, even the most historically conservative schools will come around and find out how to embrace mobile and tech in the classroom.

It's been such a treat to start a software company with some of the smartest, kindest and funniest people I know. Events like last night's social networking event from our customer People's Prep only sweeten the deal. Really proud of our team.
