What Skills Do Recruiters Need In The Future of Work?

A few weeks ago I ran a survey on recruiting trends. I personally sent that survey to a handful of former clients to talk more about what they’re experiencing. While I would love for them to fill out forms, we know each other. I wanted to ask them follow up questions.?

One interesting trend I saw pretty quickly is that everyone is thinking about talent mobility and upskilling. How do you grow the people you have? How do you make them want to stay?

Looking back, the results behind investing in talent mobility and employee training have been consistent. I can find a million surveys that all agree: promoting from within and investing in education for the team you have makes people stay.??Ask ChatGPT for some examples if you want.

Here’s the twist.

Since COVID, teams have had much larger workloads. They haven’t had time to send people off for training or budgets to invest in upskilling. The consequence? There’s no talent mobility. When roles come open, people aren’t ready for the next level because they’ve been busy just trying to keep up with the work they have.??

That aside, I wonder what we would have trained people in anyway. I mean, there are some skills we may have trained people on even 2 years ago that seem pretty obsolete now. What’s worth training people on for a future of work that feels unknown???

My short list for anyone at any level working in HR, TA, or recruiting would probably include:?

  1. Prompting. It’s not just learning what AI is capable of doing. This skill is about asking clear questions that have purpose and a clear outcome. I’m telling you - I took a class on prompting recently and it was mind-altering just how much it impacted my communication style - not just AI use.?
  2. Presentation Skills. Meetings will never go away. We’ll always need to persuade, clarify, and present ideas to other people no matter how our roles evolve.?If you go to work, you will probably go to meetings.
  3. Learning. We need to learn how to learn again. Not just candidate experience or new tools, but techniques for learning new skills quickly. How to approach solving a problem. I want to see teams trained as problem solvers, not trained to solve 1 problem. ?
  4. Real-Time Assessment. As interviewing and hiring evolve, it’ll be more important for teams to be in-house experts in real-time assessment. They will be the in-house trainer for hiring managers as candidate assessments evolve and their BS detectors need tuning.?

Katrina - excellent question! I'd say: empathy, influence, critical thinking, communication, and storytelling. I agree with you regarding the need to upskill in prompting, and I'd argue that critical thinking and communication are the core skills that enable more effective prompting and the use of generative AI. I want to add curiosity, but it could be argued that it's a trait and not a skill, although I do think curiosity is something you can consciously build/foster. Curiosity is critical because it helps drive: -problem identification and solving -critical thinking -learning and learning agility -effective research (e.g. sourcing, talent intelligence, etc.) -creativity and innovation -more effective prompting ?? ...and I think, at least for now, curiosity is my answer to the question of, "what's left for humans?" in a world where AI has been shown to outperform most people when it comes to (demonstrating) empathy, creativity, persuasion, verbal reasoning, and more.
