We all know the future is changing fast. We need to adapt to what's coming. New skills will be crucial. So, we need to figure out what those skills are.

Just to be clear, what I'm about to say applies to all project managers, not just those in the infrastructure industry. It's for anyone handling big projects, including their team members and supervisors. It's for anyone ready to adapt to the real world and take control of their future.

This means one thing: in the future, there'll be a higher demand for skills like technology, social interaction, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking. Meanwhile, the need for manual labor and basic cognitive skills will decrease.

As the job market becomes more automated, digital, and fast-paced, having foundational skills becomes crucial. These skills should help you:

  • Do things that machines can't do.
  • Work in a digital world.
  • Keep adapting to new ways of working and new jobs, no matter what your field.

So, let's get ready for what's ahead!

According to a study by McKinsey, there are four main types of skills—cognitive, digital, interpersonal, and self-leadership. These break down into 13 skill groups. For example, communication and mental flexibility fall under cognitive skills, while teamwork effectiveness falls under interpersonal skills.

The study found some interesting results. Employment was strongly linked to skills like adaptability, and for high incomes, skills in understanding digital systems, using, and developing software, planning ways of working, and communication was key.

In simple terms, being good with digital technology is linked to higher incomes. In fact, someone with high digital proficiency was 41% more likely to earn a top-tier income, according to McKinsey.

So, ask yourself: Can you adapt to change? Can you handle complex ideas at once? If so, you're well-prepared for the future job market, where employers highly value resilience and multitasking abilities.

Decision-Making Skills

Here's some good news: even as AI becomes more advanced, humans still play a vital role in data analytics. Skills like judgment and decision-making are incredibly valuable and will continue to be in demand.

Emotional and Social Intelligence

These skills are uniquely human and will always be important. Being creative, innovative, and having emotional and social intelligence can open many doors. Stay curious and think outside the box to thrive in the future.

Adaptability

In a fast-changing and competitive world, being agile and adaptable is crucial. You'll need to keep learning and evolving to stay ahead.

Sales Skills

Sales skills are becoming essential for project managers. With global uncertainty and automation, we all need to be better at advocating for what we need and getting our ideas heard. Think of sales as the art of persuasion, and you'll understand its importance.

Communication

Effective communication is key. Learn how to communicate in different situations, both in-person and online, within and outside your organization. Remember to listen, understand, think, and then respond for the best results.

Infrastructure Project Managers:

What's most important in managing projects in the infrastructure industry? It's having great project management skills and knowledge.

Project managers in this area need to focus on understanding, defining, and managing project scope. Since projects often face changes in scope, they need to be prepared to adapt and implement changes quickly.

These project managers must juggle managing work, analyzing new requirements, and controlling costs and time. On top of that, dealing with complex systems and tight budgets can lead to lots of revisions to finalize project scope and requirements. It's a challenging job, but essential for success

So, what is necessary to face that kind of challenge?

To tackle these challenges, flexibility is key! It's also important to have a forward-thinking attitude and solid knowledge of advanced project management methods.

The best approach is to blend traditional techniques with expert methods like change management, stakeholder satisfaction, managing virtual teams, and efficient scheduling and cost control.

Effective communication is a must!!!

For example, project managers and engineers have different roles and skills, but they must understand each other and communicate clearly for success. Whether it's developing new services or features, communication among team members is vital to meet project goals and deadlines.

In today's digital age, successful project management demands a fresh set of skills. Traditional abilities like teamwork and basic communication are no longer enough. Instead, there's a growing need for skills in digital literacy, critical thinking, and creativity.

Failure to adapt to these new demands can have serious consequences for project managers and their organizations, quickly rendering them outdated in the rapidly evolving project management landscape.
