This is what Skill Hunters did on Mandela Day:
18 July is an important day for people all around the world. Not only because it celebrates the life and legacy of a hero on the day of his birth, it is also a crucial reminder for us to give back to the world and make it a better place. Change is key to Mandela day and even the smallest contribution CAN make a difference because the message behind Mandela day is that everyone is able and responsible to make a change (What is mandela day? [sa]). It is a day to inspire people to embrace the values that Nelson Mandela lived by. This includes freedom, democracy, equality, diversity, reconciliation and respect (Nelson Mandela Day [sa]; How did the day come about? [sa])
For our 67 minutes, we sorted and packed donated groceries for distribution to FoodForwardSA and Pick n Pay’s beneficiary Organisations.
While we worked as a team and had fun, the most important part of the day was the reminder it brought to light - That all of us should not be caught up in a self-absorbed bubble. We are surrounded by people who sometimes need a helping hand, most times needing a helping hand ourselves. It is our time that we should be more willing to give.
