What are the similarities between Farmers and Leaders? – Part I
One of my best friends is a farmer. One day we were having lunch and he asked me, "What do you do as the Director of Alumni Relations for Princeton Seminary?" I began giving him a list of my responsibilities and when I was finished he said, “We basically do the same thing.” I replied by saying, “You are a farmer, how do we do the same thing?” He replied by saying, “We both make love grow.” (Mic drop…) Then we started to talk about the characteristics of farmers and leaders. Surprisingly, there are many parallels because they are one in the same. This article will outline some of their connections.
1.) Starting with a vision: Farmers and leaders have the responsibility to plan for the future. Both personalities begin with the end in mind. Farmers and leaders are charged with creating the framework for what to expect in the future.
2.) Knowing the seasons: Both, farmers and leaders have to be able to know the rhythm of the seasons. Understanding business cycles helps to anticipate problems before they happen. In this way, farmers and leaders can be proactive instead of reactive.
3.) Digging a hole: Farmers and leaders are deliberate and calculated individuals. They understand the importance of digging holes in order to create change. Sometimes digging these holes are necessary and sometimes they need to be adjusted.
4.) Being self-alert and ready for the challenge: Being self-reflective is a hallmark of a true farmer and leader. Many people want the praise of leadership however they don't want to exert the effort required for the role. True farmers and leaders separate themselves by taking responsibility for their decisions and responding to missteps.
5.) Dealing with Manure: Being able to turn challenges into opportunities is a major characteristic of a good farmer and leader. Life will always give a healthy amount of challenges and a good farmer and leader can turn setbacks into opportunities for change. Farmers and Leaders are advocates for change.
