As you know I am a huge procrastinator. When I have a big deadline looming, that’s normally the exact time I decide cleaning my apartment is super important! Or I’ll spend hours researching a topic to write a post about, instead of just writing it!
The bigger and more demanding a task is, the bigger our reasons for not doing it become. For example if you want to write a book, tidying up your apartment is probably only going to buy you a day or so and then you’re going to have to write that book!
So you come up with bigger excuses, you rationalize that no one would even want to read your book or think it was very good. You convince yourself that you will fail before you even start.
Why do we do this? Because we’re scared.
Writing a book or any other kind of big goal can be daunting because you’re really putting yourself out there. You’ll have to invest a lot of time and effort, plus you open yourself up to criticism on a bigger scale than you’re normally used to.
Getting over our fear of stepping outside our comfort zone is not easy!?
Here are some of my tips to help you get started on what you should be doing.
1) Write a book
Depending on what genre of book you want to write, you can be expected to write between 50,000 – 100,000 words. It’s pretty easy to get overwhelmed!?
When I first started with Listful Thinking I broke it down into chapters, then broke those chapters down into smaller segments and so on. Then when I came to write I was only thinking about two or three pages at a time.?
Suddenly your mammoth task becomes much more manageable. Break down a big task into smaller ones.
2) Start a blog?
If you’ve always wanted to start a blog, but never gotten around to it, my best advice is to make like Nike and “Just Do It!”
Seriously you can start right now – there are plenty of free resources online to help you get your feet off the ground – such as Godaddy . Starting a blog is what many people say they want to do, but taking these small steps can help you on your way.
I meet far too many people who worry early on about how they want it to look or what they feel they need to focus on. Over time your blog will naturally create its own look and identity, you don’t need to have these things up front. Just start writing and know that the first post won’t be the best or your last.

3) Get more exposure for your business
Maybe you have a great little business that is doing really well, you just wish you could get it out there a bit more. One of the best ways to get some attention for your brand or business is through the media. I meet so many people who think they can’t get media exposure because it’s out of their hands. They think TV execs just sit around in a dark room deciding who makes the cut. That couldn’t be any further from the truth – many of the experts I’ve booked in my 15 years as a TV producer pitched themselves.?
If they can do it, so can you!
