What Should I Do When I Don’t Know What to Do?

What Should I Do When I Don’t Know What to Do?

1. Encourage Yourself in the Lord through Worship

When uncertainty strikes, the Bible teaches us to turn to God in worship, to gain His perspective on our situation.

As God promises in Psalm 32:8, "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye."

Worship lets us see that God always works all things together for our good.

2. Practice the Prayer of Inquiry

After worship, engage in prayer, seeking God's wisdom just as David did (1 Samuel 30:8).

Remember, "In Christ are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3), and God's Spirit reveals even the deep things of God to us (1 Corinthians 2:10).

Pray in the Spirit, asking God for the knowledge of His will with the wisdom and understanding only His Spirit can provide (Colossians 1:9).

Don't forget that;

“…at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words. God, the searcher of the heart, knows fully our longings, yet he also understands the desires of the Spirit, because the Holy Spirit passionately pleads before God for us, his holy ones, in perfect harmony with God’s plan and our destiny.” (Rom 8:26-28)

3. Be Persistent and Meditate on God's Word

The goal of prayer is to hear from God. Don’t stop praying when you feel like you have prayed enough, rather keep inquiring until He speaks.

As you pray, take time to read and meditate on Scripture, recalling how God has guided you in past seasons. Psalm 77:6 advises, "Commune with your heart and let your spirit make diligent search."

Practice silence and stillness before the LORD too. If the goal is to hear Him speak, you may have to be silent for a while and take the heart posture of a listener so He can speak.

4. Respond with Worship and Thanksgiving

When God reveals His guidance, respond with worship and thanksgiving. Psalm 16:7 says, "I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons."

Worship strengthens your conviction in God's direction.

5. Walk in Full Obedience

When I was in campus fellowship, my Bible study coordinator always said "Remember that half obedience is disobedience.”

Take action with a heart ready for complete obedience, listening closely to God as you move forward.

Staying receptive to His voice will ensure you’re in tune with His guidance, even as the circumstances unfold.

6. Walk in Love

Finally, walk in love toward everyone, including those who may have hurt you. Show kindness and generosity, knowing that every detail of your life is woven together for good because you are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28 TPT).

Selah.
