WHAT SHOULD I DO?

A few days ago I was in a virtual class via Zoom. The class was made up of about three different generations. I was in the middle generation. The class was hosted by members of the older generation but attended by a younger generation, the millennial generation.

This setting reminded me of my experience with one of my professors back then at the University of Lagos. I had just submitted a term paper, a typed document. It was a disaster. I was given coaching on basic MS Word functions and how my work could have been more professionally done, safe to say that I lost valuable marks as a result of my ignorance.

Summing up these two scenarios, I realized that awareness of technology is not the same as having sufficient know-how of the technology. Besides, the older generation has had to live with multiple changes in the way they live and work and has developed the essential skill of change adaption. They have learned that every new technology must be learned. Thus, the need to adopt new technology in the COVID-19 season is not new.

Unfortunately, this younger generation was born in the age of technology. The generation is aware of technologies like Zoom, Slack, and the others, even excel and the entire Microsoft package. But is the practical knowledge of these tools available? Unfortunately, the number of young people who have this know-how pales in comparison to those who don’t. Please note that even some exposed young people struggle with this.

In sum, check out all the technologies in use this season and begin to make use of them. Create a Zoom account; host a meeting with your friends! Search for all the technologies in your industry and begin to master them. Don’t be a Snapchat/Tik Tok expert who cannot share a link to a Google Drive account! Learn all the fun technologies but not at the detriment of the ones that will determine if you will have a livelihood.
