What Is Shopify?

Ecommerce, also known as electronic commerce or sometimes internet commerce, refers to the buying and selling of goods or services via the internet. Ecommerce is often refers to the sale of physical products online, but it can also describe any kind of commercial transaction that is performed online. Ecommerce has changed the way we shop and conduct business. To do so organizations have built sites or storefronts where customers/clients can buy or sell products and services. This is where applications like Shopify come in.?

What is Shopify??

Founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke (current CEO), Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake, Shopify was first known as Snowdevil. The founders struggled to find a comprehensive platform for their store that was meant to sell snowboarding equipment. Thus, was born Shopify, a subscription-based platform that allows you to build an online storefront using the SaaS model. Today the platform hosts sites such as those of Gymshark, Staples, Heinz, and Lord & Taylor. According to BackLinko “457 million?people bought from a Shopify store in 2020. The number of shoppers placing an order with Shopify merchants has increased by?52.33%?over the past year.” The statement is accompanied by the graph below to show that increasing number of shoppers.

What Does Shopify Do & How Does Shopify Work?

Since it is a cloud-based solution, it eliminates the hassle of maintaining servers and affords you both flexibility and reliability. A main problem using a server instead of going cloud-based is how your business’ site will handle traffic or how your online store(s) would manage something like Black Friday sales. With a cloud-based solution websites can effectively reduce website crashes while managing data and payments quickly. But this is not all that Shopify is known for.?

Businesses with existing inventory systems, websites and more can replatform and opt for a more cost-effective way to move both tangible and intangible products/services.?

Without learning how to code, businesses from small to enterprise level, can use Shopify to:?

  • Collect and analyze customer data
  • Create & secure domain names
  • Design and personalize their online storefront
  • Use built-in SEO tools to rank hire on organic searches
  • Support physical and online transactions
  • Set up customer reviews/ testimonies
  • Further customize user experience as needed with plugins and add-ons.

As mentioned before Shopify operates on a subscription basis, this starts off with a free 14-day trial to Shopify Lite, Basic Shopify, Shopify Advanced, Shopify and Shopify Plus. According to your business’ needs, what you are trying to achieve and the types of products or services you are offering, you would choose the best fitting subscription plan. For example, according to Small Business Trends, “with a monthly subscription of $29 (the Basic Shopify plan) is ideal for businesses trying to build an online storefront. It comes with basic e-commerce functionality” while plans like Shopify Plus would be better in use for businesses that are willing to pay about $2,000 per month for a customized solution particular to their goals.

At Gaggle we bring you the breakdown and basics of solutions like Shopify so that you can do whats best your business or your growth. Whether it is learning and training in the technologies that are relevant, identifying technology that you need and eventually will need talent for, staying in the loop so you can hire better or even if you just want to stay up to date as an employer or professional. Gaggle is a community where you can find unprecedented access to enterprise application specific opportunities and knowledge. Put your best foot forward with us.

Great article! A few years back, I had a t-shirt design that I created and wanted to find a way to sell it without having to buy the inventory upfront. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but at the time, Shopify had an option where they would produce the t-shirt and ship it out as the orders came in. Although it was more costly, it eliminated inventory related risk.
