What is SEO? Explained

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.”

In simple terms, it means the process of improving your site to increase its visibility for relevant searches. SEO is the process of making your site rank as high as possible on Google or other Search Engines, (SEO) is the practice of getting targeted traffic to a website from a search engine’s organic rankings.

SEO is all about improving a site’s rankings in the organic (non-paid) section of the search results. The main benefit of ranking for a specific keyword is that you can get “free” traffic to your site.

The higher your site ranks, the more visible your business is, and the more traffic and sales your business is likely to generate.

SEO is a never-ending battle to get more eyes on your website and convince Google that your site is worth sending searchers to.

How SEO Work?

SEO works by optimizing your site for the search engine that you want to rank for, whether it’s Google, Bing, Amazon or YouTube.

When you search for something in Google (or any other search engine), an algorithm works in real-time to bring you what that search engine considers the “best” result.

Specifically, Google scans its index of “hundreds of billions” of pages in order to find a set of results that will best answer your search.

The higher your site ranks, the more visible your business is, and the more traffic and sales your business is likely to generate.

However, Google doesn’t simply rank “the most relevant pages at the top”. That’s because there are thousands (or even millions) of relevant pages for every search term.

Search engines rank the organic search results based on hundreds of different ranking factors. But in general, organic results are deemed by Google to be the most relative, trustworthy, and authoritative websites or web pages on the subject.

Why Is SEO Important?

Billions of searches are conducted online every single day. This means an immense amount of specific, high-intent traffic. Nearly 90% of all traffic on the web starts with a Google search. Google dominates among search engines, but don't sleep on sites like Yahoo and Bing

So how does Google determine which pages to return in response to what people search for?

Google is looking for pages that contain high-quality, relevant information relevant to the searcher’s query.

Google's algorithm determines relevance by “crawling” your website’s content and evaluating whether that content is relevant to what the searcher is looking, Google determines “quality” by a number of means, but a site's link profile - the number and quality of other websites that link to a page and site as a whole.

There are hundreds of ranking factors that Google’s algorithm considers in response to searches, Google is constantly updating and refining its process to ensure that it delivers the best possible user experience.

The first step in search engine optimization is to determine what you’re actually optimizing for. This means identifying terms people are searching for, also known as “keywords,” that you want your website to rank for in search engines like Google.
