What is SEO – A Brief History of Search Engine Optimization

In today’s digital world, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is essential for promoting any business online. Whether small or large, businesses need an online presence to build their brand, and SEO is one of the most powerful strategies to achieve this.

Hi, I’m Nafiz Sazzad. For the past 7 years, I’ve been working in SEO and providing training. Today, I want to break down what SEO is and give you a glimpse into its history.

Let’s dive into the true meaning of SEO and how it all started!

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

Breaking it down:

Search Engine + Optimization

A search engine is a software program that searches and retrieves the most relevant information from the web based on the user’s query or keywords. You and I use search engines daily—yes, I’m talking about Google!

Google dominates the market with over 92% market share, making it the most widely used search engine. Other search engines like Bing hold about 3.37%, Yandex has 1.64%, Yahoo stands at 1.1%, Baidu at 0.99%, and DuckDuckGo at 0.53%.

Now, let’s focus on the second part: Optimization. This refers to a process that ensures a website is set up to perform well on search engines like Google. It includes making sure the website’s structure, content, and images are in line with search engine guidelines.

In short, SEO is a strategy aimed at improving a website’s ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs).

An Example to Understand SEO

Emily is a dentist based in Chicago, Illinois. After finishing her studies, she has recently started her practice and created a website to attract patients in her area. Understanding the importance of digital marketing, she hopes to reach more clients through her online presence.

Now, meet James. He’s a university student also living in Chicago. Recently, James has been experiencing tooth pain, and he decides it’s time to visit a dentist. Since he doesn’t know any local dentists, he turns to Google and searches for “dentist near me.”

Here’s the key: If Emily’s website is well-optimized for SEO, it will appear in the top results on Google’s search page, and James will quickly find it. He may then contact Emily’s clinic and book an appointment, making her a new client.

This updated example shows how SEO helps businesses, like Emily’s, connect with potential customers in a busy city like Chicago.

The Role of SEO

You might be wondering: What role did SEO play in this? Ali didn’t just stumble upon Sara’s website randomly. It appeared in his search results because Sara’s site was optimized according to Google’s best practices, which is why it ranked highly.

SEO is not magic—it won’t bring in visitors overnight. Instead, SEO is a combination of strategies and ongoing efforts to improve a website’s ranking over time. Results may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months, or even a year or more. But once implemented, SEO is an ongoing process that remains critical for as long as the website is live.

A Brief History of SEO

SEO has its roots in the early development of the internet itself, and the need for website optimization began alongside the rise of search engines.

The first search engine was "Archie" (short for Archives), created in 1990 by Alan Emtage, a student at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. However, it was WebCrawler, launched in 1994 by Brian Pinkerton, that became the first full-text web search engine. WebCrawler allowed users to search for any word on a webpage, making it revolutionary for its time.

The term Search Engine Optimization (SEO) began gaining traction in the mid-1990s, but its exact origin is debated. SEO expert Danny Sullivan noted that the term probably started being used around 1997. Among the early pioneers in popularizing SEO was Bruce Clay, who helped make the term mainstream.

In 1998, Google was officially launched, bringing with it a new era in search technology. Google’s search algorithm and ranking factors made SEO more important than ever. As Google’s popularity grew, so did the demand for optimizing websites to perform well in search results. By 2003, the term "SEO" had its first dedicated Wikipedia page, marking a key moment in its growing significance.

Final Thoughts

Throughout my years of experience, I’ve come to realize just how vital SEO is as a skill and a strategy. It’s indispensable for every website, especially local businesses and e-commerce platforms.

If you own a website, having a basic understanding of SEO is crucial. You don’t need to become an SEO expert, but knowing the fundamentals will help you manage your online presence effectively.
