What is #SAFe #Agile?

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a set of principles, practices, and competencies for achieving business agility using Lean, Agile, and DevOps. It is designed to help organizations deliver high-quality, value-added products and services to their customers more quickly and efficiently.

SAFe provides a structured approach to scaling Agile practices across large organizations or large projects. It does this by creating better alignment and synchronization across different teams and organizational levels.

SAFe comprises multiple levels: Essential, Large Solution, Portfolio, and Full configurations, each designed to meet specific organizational needs.

Some of the best practices for digital project management in a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) environment include:

  • Implementing Agile Release Trains (ARTs). An ART is a long-lived team of Agile teams that incrementally develop, deliver, and validate system-level solutions in fixed timeboxes. ARTs provide a rhythm and routine for work, with a focus on delivering value incrementally.
  • Holding Program Increment (PI) planning events. These sessions align all teams to a shared mission and vision for the upcoming increment. It's an opportunity for multiple Agile teams to identify dependencies and risks and to synchronize their work for the next 8-12 weeks.
  • Aligning teams to value streams. Teams should be organized around value streams to deliver the maximum value to the business. Value streams represent the series of steps that an organization uses to deliver a product or service to its customers.
  • Using Lean Portfolio Management (LPM). LPM aligns strategy and execution by applying Lean and systems thinking approaches to strategy and investment funding. It also promotes Agile portfolio operations and Lean governance.
  • Continuously integrating and testing. Regular integration and continuous testing are essential to ensure the delivery of a high-quality, reliable product. In the SAFe context, this requires collaboration between teams to manage dependencies and coordinate the delivery of features.
  • Using DevOps practices. DevOps practices should be in place to facilitate Continuous Integration (CI), Continuous Deployment (CD), and Release on Demand. These practices improve the efficiency of delivery and maintain the quality of the product.
  • Applying systems thinking. Consider the system as a whole, not just the individual components or teams. Systems thinking helps to understand how things influence one another within a whole entity.
  • Managing backlogs effectively. In SAFe, there are various levels of backlogs (team, program, and portfolio). Effective management of these backlogs helps ensure that the right features are being developed at the right time.
  • Inspecting and adapting regularly. Regular inspection and adaptation are crucial for continuous improvement. SAFe includes an Inspect and Adapt event at the end of each Program Increment, providing a dedicated time for reflection and adaptation.
  • Fostering a culture of innovation and learning. Encourage regular innovation and learning periods (Innovation and Planning iterations) for continual improvement and technical exploration. Promote a learning culture where failures are seen as opportunities for learning and growth.

SAFe is a powerful framework that can help organizations achieve business agility. By following the best practices outlined above, organizations can improve their ability to deliver high-quality, value-added products and services to their customers more quickly and efficiently.
