What is Rick Doing Now?

In February of 2019, I formed my own eCommerce consulting firm - RMW Commerce Consulting. I did this after spending the last 20 years as a technology entrepreneur and operator exclusively in the eCommerce industry with companies like ChannelAdvisor, Barnes & Noble.com, Merchantry and Pitney Bowes.

So let me tell you a little about the company.

When do companies come to me?

CEOs of early and growth-stage B2B eCommerce software platforms (including those building marketplaces) come to me in the following situations:

  1. They are entering a new market.  They are unclear about their messaging and goto-market strategy and are afraid of wasting their precious time and money.  I help them review were they are, ensure they have a clear picture of their target customer, and design a custom plan to ensure that every facet of their business has a focused plan of execution for the growth they desire.
  2. They need to ensure their company has a clear vision and organizational execution plan that matches.  The employees and CEO know the company could be 10x more effective if only everyone was on the same page.  I help them review what’s working, what's not, and take them through a detailed process to uncover a vision for a future so that they are able to hit their critical growth milestones.
  3. Solving an Urgent Business Challenge. Some important area of their business is keeping the CEO up at night.  It’s an important function like customer acquisition, retention or technology, or a major new product launch.  They have tried different approaches which haven’t been successful and are tired of guessing. The CEO needs someone to get a fresh pair of eyes to help the team figure it out.  First, I build a crystal-clear picture of success and review the situation with all the relevant stakeholders. From there, I get to work with the team untangling the knot that’s been created in order to leave the company in a much better position than when I found it.

Who is my ideal customer?

My ideal customer is a B2B eCommerce software vendor, or someone building a multi-sided marketplace.

My ideal customer is between $1M and $20M in sales. Enough to matter, but not yet where they just need to "pour on the sales and marketing" to get to scale. Things are still being figured out. However, big companies can qualify too. Perhaps you're a big company just getting into eCommerce!

My ideal customer could be based outside the US. I talk to many companies in Europe, Middle East, and Asia that are looking to enter the North American market effectively.

I love investors who have the ability to raise funds, but want to use that money in the best way possible.

I adore technical founders who are trying to make their business journey. I have a Master's in Electrical Engineering; I have been on your journey.

Ultimately, I work with growing companies who have not yet maximized their potential. They know they need to launch a new product or enter a new market to hit scale. But they are worried about wasting precious time. It's not even so much the money, as the time. Every day wasted is critical. If I could accelerate your learning even one month wouldn't that be worth it?
