What Are RF Terminations

RF Terminations or loads are passive components that are used to absorb energy and prevent RF signal?in a radio frequency (RF) circuit. The main purpose of an RF termination or load is to maintain signal integrity and to prevent signal reflections, which can cause interference and degrade the performance of the RF system.

In this article, we will delve deep into the world of these?terminations,?exploring their types, applications, and key considerations.

Types of RF Terminations

RF Terminations come in various types, including coaxial, waveguide and low PIM terminations. Here are brief description of each type.

Coaxial Termination

A coaxial termination is a device used to properly terminate a coaxial port. It is designed to match the impedance of the RF system, typically 50 or 75 Ohms.

RF ONE offers a broad selection of RF, Microwave and millimeter wave termination loads up to 110 GHz with average power up to 2000 watts. Our RF loads come in SMA, N, BNC, 4.3-10, 7/16 DIN, QMA, QN, 3.5mm, SMP, 2.92mm, 2.4mm, 1.85mm, 1.35mm, 1.0mm etc connectors, by default 50 ohm.

Waveguide Termination

Similar to coaxial termination, waveguide terminations are also passive devices placed at the open-end of waveguide junction to match the impedance and reduce excessive signal reflections.

RF ONE provides a complete line of waveguide termination loads covering the waveguide sizes WR10 to WR650 with all power levels.

Low PIM Termination

A Low PIM (Passive Intermodulation) Termination is a device used to absorb or terminate RF (Radio Frequency) signals, while minimizing the generation of passive intermodulation products.Low PIM terminations are commonly used in applications where strict RF signal quality is required, such as in wireless communication systems, cellular networks, and distributed antenna systems. They help reduce signal degradation, improve signal clarity, and minimize interference.

RF ONE?offers?a range of low PIM terminations, ranging from 170 dBc (test grade) to 150 dBc (production grade )?in connectors of DIN 7/16, 4.3-10, N type and SMA. Our low PIM terminations are available in 25 W, 30 W, 50 W, 70 W, 100 W, 150 W,?200 W?and 300W.

Selecting RF Terminations

When selecting an?RF termination it is important to know the parameters that you need to specify. Below are a list of the key parameters need to be considered?for when selecting a termination:

Impedance:?This is the most important characteristic of a termination. This is the characteristic impedance of the port that needs to be terminated. The impedance value of the termination must match the characteristic impedance of the port being terminated. 50 Ohm terminations are the most common, followed by 75 Ohms and then custom values based on the system requirement.

Frequency Ranges(GHz): The frequency range, usually specified in GHz, is the span of frequencies the device can effectively work with.?

Avg Power (W):?This is the power level that can be adsorbed by the termination while maintaining its electrical characteristic.

VSWR:?VSWR is a unit-less ratio that defines the amount of power reflected by the termination. A value of 1:1 indicates that 100% of the incident energy is absorbed by the load or there is no reflected energy. Any other value indicates that a portion of the energy is reflected.

Return loss (dB):?Return loss also measures the amount of power reflected by the termination. Better put, it is a measure of the match between the impedance of the RF terminations and the impedance of the system. A higher return loss is desirable in an electronic circuit.?

Package Type:?Terminations are available in surface mount, connectorized, and waveguide form factor. When it is?connectorized, then the type of connector must also be specified. Connector types include: 1.85mm, 2.4mm, 2.92mm, SMA, BNC, N Type etc.

Conclusion

Overall, RF terminations play a critical role in various RF and microwave applications by absorbing signals and minimizing reflected power, thereby optimizing system performance and accuracy.?Whether its for testing and calibration or RF power measurement, the correct choice of RF Termination make a significant impact on overall system performance.
