What is the relationship between psychology and the world?
Note: This is a part of my 30-day challenge, but the response worth a post (not just because it exceeds the word limit of LinkedIn) so here you are.
Day 5 of <30-day Starter Challenge>
(Read about this challenge at the end)
Q:
In your opinion (someone in the psychiatry practice), what is the relationship between psychology and the world?
A:
"Psychology is a discipline where scientists always present their subjective values through objective methods and then convince others that the objective world is like this. All the theories just tell others that "I tried this way and got such a result, and it is enough to know this".
Watson said that raising children through behavioral training can be directed to cultivate any child into any target career and become anyone. He did not say that this child will be healthy and happy. He would do such an experiment, and has such a conclusion, because he grew up in this way, and he also believes that the experimental results support the hypothesis, but so what?
It can only prove that this kind of "cause and effect" exists, but it does not mean that this kind of existence is beneficial to physical and mental health. Psychological theory just presents a phenomenon. If we talk about the relationship with the world, it is probably just out of context. What if the world knew that his eldest son committed suicide, his second son self-harmed, and his third son wandered all his life? Of course, the people in it are not intentional.
Psychology and anything related to human beings have the same relationship with this world, but they only flow through the world without ever changing the world."
Thoughts:
I majored in psychology in college for a while, and then switched. I wanted to be a psychiatrist, or a therapist, to help those suffered from mental illness. I still have great interest in psychology; however, I cannot see myself pursuing such career because I knew that I would resonate and sympathize so much that I eventually would be devastated. Sometimes, a gift can also be a curse. There are many ways to help others and the world, and it's best to choose the way(s) where you can be the best version of you.
What's this <30-day Starter Challenge>?
I want to start a challenge to step out of my comfort zone step by step by asking one person one question each day and see where it takes me.
