What kind of regrets do you have?
Jim Meldrum
I'm Offline Until December - On A Globe-Trotting Adventure - Heading To NYC To Support My Eldest Daughter In Her First New York Marathon - Then Australia Visiting My Other Daughter Who's Been Working There Since January
"Regrets ... I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention" etc etc
What do you consider to be the biggest regret ... having done something and regretted it later OR not done something and regretted the missed opportunity.
I think I'd rather regret doing something / saying something / trying something than be the kind of person who looks back and see's a missed opportunity (evidence suggests there's usually a lot more than just one) not taken.
My friends have a habit of reminding me that I am usually open to most things and if, for example, a business opportunity comes my way I'd jump right in and seize it ... then figure out how to make best use of it later.
Although it (just about) always works out okay .. I cannot recommend this as a strategy to anyone else ... so please take it as one of those "Don't do as I do" kind of things (but it is fun and keeps things from being dull - LOL).
So what's your biggest regret in business ... did you turn down a project because you were too busy ... did you put off making "that" phone call because you didn't want to hear the words "no thanks" ... did you avoid meeting a potential customer because you felt they would not want to work with "little old you"?
OR
Was it that project you agreed to take on when you were really busy and probably didn't do you're best work ... was it the 100 phone calls you made to hear 100 "no thanks" ... was it that meeting where the potential customer treated you with disdain and made you feel small and undeserving of their time?
If it's any of the latter (or variations along the same lines) then a big WELL DONE because you will no doubt have learned something as a result of giving it a go ... nothing is a failure if you've learned something from the experience.
I read one of Michael Caine's books recently ("Blowing the Bloody Doors Off") and in his book he talks about regrets and learning from them ... here's a quote
"... I know now what I didn't know then only because I went ahead ..."
Hindsight is a wonderful thing ... but only as a learning opportunity not a regret.
What do you think?

5 年Even though I work from a home office and see him every morning at breakfast, and usually do the school run, I STILL feel like I've neglected our son a bit.? Just have to remind myself that if I worked in the city he'd see a lot less of me.
