What it really takes to create financial wellbeing as a lawyer.

What it really takes to create financial wellbeing as a lawyer.

Financial wellness is an important aspect of creating a balanced life. It takes money to finance the life of our dreams, but many lawyers find themselves trapped by money, rather than using it as a tool to shape our lives.

The National Task Force for Lawyer Wellbeing advocates for financial stability as a core aspect of what lawyers need to thrive - and I've learned this first hand. That's why I'm so excited to share my FIRST podcast episode, featuring my personal finance coach, Jessica Medina. Here's a quick preview of what we discuss:

  • Financial stability is not just the math - it's also a feeling. It's important to know how much money you need to earn to pay your bills and grow your retirement accounts, but it's equally important to have a feeling of clarity about your financial progress. Fear and uncertainty can create avoidance, but clarity promotes engagement and resilience.
  • Mindset matters when it comes to money. It's nearly impossible to sustain behavioral changes without changing the beliefs (values, mindsets, attitudes) that fuel those behaviors. Many of us have negative feelings around money, which can result in counterproductive behaviors. Productive mindsets about money provide motivation to create financial stability.
  • It’s ok if you need help. Personal finance was not (until recently) taught in law school. A well paying job doesn’t inherently translate into an accurate understanding of personal finance. Everyone needs a system to manage cash and achieve financial goals - Jessica's system works really well for me.

You don't want to miss this podcast - consider this my gift to you for financial literacy month :)

FOCUS:

Not all of the tasks (balls) we juggle are created equally. Some are made of rubber, they bounce back quickly and there’s really no harm done if we drop them. Other balls may be made of glass - they are incredibly fragile and expensive. When you have too much on your plate, give yourself permission to focus on what matters most - its ok to let the rubber balls take a break.
