What "really" is development? Examining Gulu, a rural farming community in Northern Uganda?

Houses made of palm fronds and mud bricks, solar as the source of energy, naturally paved roads with luscious grasses and shrubs and trees- I have never breathed in fresher air.
Presence of schools - both primary and secondary schools and health care centers. Still maintaining this large acre of natural land but still an underdeveloped community.
What really is development? Industrialization? The presence of processing plants to replace the women currently sitting underneath the shade breaking limestone into tinier pieces? Did we not agree that the presence of large industries was a huge source of pollution, contributing to and compounding the impact of climate change?
As I exit the community, I notice an airstrip. Besides farming and mining, they have professional jobs - besides teaching. They have and are aware of this mode of transport. So why are they so underdeveloped?
How are we managing the complex relationship between environmental and developmental challenges for environmental, economic, and societal development?
Implementing a sustainable land use transition across food, fuel, and nature needs has become critical as the impact of climate change deepens rural vulnerabilities and adaptation mechanisms are barely catching up.

1 年In Obafemi Awolowo words, "only mechanisation and modernisation agricultural system can attract many of our youths back to agriculture, for it is cruel and selfish to urge them back on any other basis, as most of us who preach this sermon of ""back to land"" won't want to return there on any other basis either. All hand are ties, we know the solution, we are looking up to those who are creating a pathway towards enacting and implementing those solution.
