What Is the Real Impact of IT on Society?
In simple words, the impact of IT on the society is a revolution phasing through an evolutionary process. Advancement in the field of information technology is making human civilization enter in another era. To evaluate the long-term change that IT can bring we need to look at the human history. Just take an overview of Industrial Revolution that changed the lifestyle of people on this planet. In the same manner, innovation in IT is making the inhabitants of Earth evolve more dynamically.
But the ultimate change is the multi-step process and may raise strong voices of resistance.
Here is how IT is going to bring a shift in human society.
1. IT has redefined the Human Interactions
IT has produced the new mechanisms of human interactions, mainly in the form of social media. People have become more interested in the lives of their far-off acquaintances rather than close relatives. They don’t care about what is happening to a person with whom they share the same roof. But they continue spreading messages and awareness about some victim in another corner of the world. IT receives a lot of praise for rendering the distances meaningless, but at the same times, it has made people bound to the screens while restricting their moments. So, decline of communication due to technology is the one significant aspect.
2. Globalization and a World Free from Political Boundaries
Well, it would be too early to predict that human race would ultimately end up in a world free of nation states. But, such a conclusion is not merely impossible. Knowledge about diverse ethnic groups on this planet and an unbiased analysis of their behavior can compel people to discover the common denominator of humanity. In the urge to explore the earth without any regulatory restrictions may force human beings to decide a world free from political boundaries. But such an impact merely seems to be a fascination for an optimist who considers this Earth as his country and human beings as his fellow countrymen.
3. A Society that Enjoys More Freedom of Speech
IT has undoubtedly offered human beings access to vast knowledge. In such a scenario, it has become easy for modern day people to become free from the prejudice and bias. They are more in a position to conduct an in-depth analysis for reaching out the truth, whether absolute or relative. At the same times, people are better able to voice their opinion, either directly or indirectly. If they get banned on one platform, then they can choose for the other. If all the portals close their doors for them, then they can still propagate their opinions through their friends.
4. It Has Made the Planet Home to Confused People
Technology has evolved to reach the era of robotics, but it has not done enough to mitigate the agony of human soul. An access to too much knowledge has created a condition of indecisiveness for the people. It has become difficult for them to distinguish between what is wrong and what is right; this is because everyone is coming up with their own versions of truth. To sum up in better words, more people are likely to be a victim of identity crises and existential crises, in the fake post-truth world. This IT-powered era, which is still struggling to overcome human suffering, is more likely to make people look for a meaning in life.
