What is THE REAL GRIT?

As you may have recently noticed, there are two TERRIFIC books in the marketplace that discuss GRIT. The first is GRIT by Angela Duckworth. The second is THE GRIT by yours truly. You can get mine for FREE at www.mattmanero.com. You can get Angela’s on Amazon for around $16. Angela’s is based on first class academic research. Mine is based on blue collar bust my ass experience. Both are worth your time and if I do say so myself, I highly recommend them.

But when it really comes down to it…what is GRIT? My definition of GRIT is so simple. I define GRIT as the ability to do ANYTHING LEGAL…ANYTHING to reach your desired outcome. Period end of story. So simple, but so many people don’t get it. They think they have GRIT, but, they have nothing of the sort.

Last week in my office, one of my newer salespeople came to me and asked about GRIT. He told me that GRIT was inside him, but he is confused why it wasn’t showing him greater results. He has more month at the end of the money lately.

I asked him a few simple questions:

My Question: Who are you listening to, reading or watching to skill up?

Answer: NOBODY.

My Question: When you get home at night are you researching our industry? Answer: NO

My Question: Do you work from open to close? 

Answer: NO

My Question: Have you gotten a second job when you leave CFF? 

Answer: NO

Conclusion? While I like my salesperson, he hasn’t tapped into GRIT, not even close. When GRIT is in your bones, you will do ANYTHING LEGAL…ANYTHING to reach success. Period. End of story. Nothing will stand in your way. NOTHING. Excuses are not given. Time is not wasted. Hills are climbed. Cold calls are made until your ear hurts. Research is done until your eyes bleed. Days off are put on hold and so are vacations and date nights. Grit is the unyielding belief that success is part of your destiny. It is not to be toyed with, played with or joked around with. LIVING WITH GRIT INSIDE YOU, MEANS THAT YOU HAVE MADE THE COMMITMENT TO DO ANYTHING LEGAL…ANYTHING TO REACH IT.

Stop going easy on yourself. Push yourself to a level that makes others cringe. Anything less than this type of level of effort may work for some…but not for someone with GRIT.
