What Rattles Your Identity?
According to Psychology Today, one's identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships, and values that create one’s sense of self. Under immense pressure, do you know who you are and what you stand for? So, I ask the question, what rattles your identity?
Our fast-paced, social media-dominated image and identity, out there for all to see, can make even the strongest individual vulnerable to attack from just about anyone over any claim. You name it, and there is someone ready to pounce on the chance to criticize your choices, your behavior, or your position on any given topic, idea, or opinion.
While gossip, to most ears, has a sweet flavor, it poisons the listener. Often, facts go unchecked, and assumptions are made, leaving a trail of destruction that may or may not be founded in the truth. Individuals get buried under the whispers of speculation of misconduct across a wide range of accusations. We’ve watched men and women crumble under secrets and lies. We’ve seen public and private figures in power resign due to scrutiny of reported gratuities, kickbacks, and favors.
Do you have a core of friends and family who challenge you to be the best version of yourself and hold you lovingly accountable when appropriate? Is there a set of principles, values, and core beliefs that secure you to solid ground during storms? When the rest of the world seems to be losing it, can you keep your wits about you and not forget who you are?
Ask for candid feedback, even if it’s hard to hear. Surround yourself with people who tell you the truth, even when it hurts. Be receptive to constructive feedback and apply it. Know who you are, what you stand for, and your non-negotiables. As difficult as it can be at any given time, rest assured that, in the end, pressure from any outside force improves and strengthens your identity.
