What the Queen said about Biodiversity Net Gain (really, she just did that!)
Well I never thought I’d ever be quoting the Queen on Linkedin but here I am.
Though parliament seems to have a one track mind right now I think it was very notable that last week the Queens speech (14th October) included the following section on the forthcoming legislation to introduce a mandatory approach to Biodiversity Net Gain. In her speech she set out that:
“My Ministers remain committed to protecting and improving the environment for future generations. For the first time, environmental principles will be enshrined in law. Measures will be introduced to improve air and water quality, tackle plastic pollution and restore habitats so plants and wildlife can thrive. Legislation will also create new legally-binding environmental improvement targets.….[Environment Bill].”
This major shift in how built developments will mitigate/compensate for impacts upon biodiversity is certainly leading a number of my clients to seek guidance from me on the matter. It has been encouraging to see how some major developers have reacted in a positive and responsible way to what will be a big change to their business.
