Learning from your own experiences and reflections is the path to wisdom. However, true genius lies in the ability to learn from others, said Niranjan Hiranandani, the Indian billionaire businessman in an interview. I was not surprised to hear that he learns every day from everyone.
This got me reflecting on the importance of having mentors for personal and professional growth.
By studying the failures and successes of those who have walked the path before you, you can shortcut the journey to achievement.
Here are my thoughts on the qualities that make a good mentor:
1.?????? Enthusiasm for Sharing Knowledge
The mentor should be genuinely excited and willing to share their hard-won wisdom and insights with you?and find genuine joy and fulfillment in helping others develop and grow. You can pick up these cues in an introductory meeting.
2.?????? Relevant Expertise and Knowledge
If you are curious to learn about a specific field, look for someone who has relevant experience and expertise in your domain or industry. Otherwise, there is lot you can learn from cross disciplinary fields. Preferably select one who is not too ahead of you as they may not be able to relate to your current situation.
3.?????? Alignment of Values
Research potential mentors and try to understand their values, priorities, strength of character and how they approach life and work. Look for alignment between your values and theirs. This is more important than their credentials or status.
4.?????? ?Human Skills
The mentor should be patient, kind, be willing to listen, and extend empathy to truly understand your perspective?and situation.
5.?????? Ability to Give Honest, Direct Feedback
The mentor should be able to deliver constructive, specific, and direct feedback, even if it's tough to hear. They should be willing to "call you out" when needed to help you improve.
In summary, look for a mentor who has relevant expertise, a genuine desire to share knowledge, values fit, a commitment to your development, the courage to give honest feedback, and the ability to listen and empathize.

8 个月Archana Shetty, over my career I've had several mentors, all of whom became mentors after a period of time of developing our relationship and my developing a high trust and respect for their business acumen. To me it's not something to rush into. I believe good mentors are hard to find.
