What Putting Values to Work Can Look Like

The way we live and the way we work is intersecting like never before. Remote and hybrid ways of working have not only blurred the lines that divide home and work, but also changed how people think about them.??

Research over the last two years and trends like the great reshuffle have continuously pointed to this shift in thinking. A shift that is prompting them to demand more personal value and purpose from both life and work.?As recent as earlier this year, research by Gartner revealed that people have developed a new sense of awareness and worth for themselves and the world around them.

For most organizations, values and purpose have always been a defining set of principles that guide how business is conducted, how employees are treated and so on. But today, many are being called on to go a step further and demonstrate how these values are practiced in the real world and the impact they are creating. What does this look like in today’s landscape??

From storytelling to business impact?

In a world where the use of data and digital media is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, measuring impact and visualizing it has never been easier. But more than just optics, focusing on demonstrable impact may be one of the best business decisions an organization can make.??

At Samsung, grounding our five principles - People, Excellence, Change, Integrity and Co-prosperity - in a real-world context has helped us consistently and successfully scale in virtually every aspect of our business and powered our business capabilities.??

Championing change from the inside out??

While change is never easy, it is extremely important. Externally, our commitment to change may be visible in the innovation of our products; but many of our efforts are also focused on future proofing our people and keeping our culture relevant.?

One?example of this is Project Reimagine, an internal initiative that works to address knowledge upskilling and business transformation across subsidiaries in our region. Now in its second year, the project is an experiential development program that brings together members from different teams from SEAO countries to innovate on future-focused topics that are critical to our business. So far, it has proved effective in promoting not only synergy across teams but also professional growth and career development for project members.??

Some of our other forward-looking initiatives like Future Generation Lab are focused on developing?organizational culture to reflect and include newer generations in the workforce. Samsung’s sustainability practices are also examined and updated every year to focus on the most pressing issues facing our planet. Together, these diverse initiatives work to keep our organisation and its people nimble and ahead of the curve.??

Working for and alongside local and global communities??

The value of co-prosperity is core to the purpose-driven innovation that keeps Samsung at the forefront of technology and progress. This value is practiced both on a high-level and on ground-level, serving as an organizational compass.??

Some initiatives have grown with us through the years. Generation17 , for example, is a mentorship program in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that has now expanded to Africa, Asia, CIS & Europe, North America, Latin America and the Middle East. Samsung and UNDP continuously engage with the program’s young leaders to determine how they can better mobilize global communities, educate people about the Global Goals, and build impactful and inclusive solutions.??

Our focus on young innovators can be seen at the ground-level, too, with educational initiatives like Samsung Innovation Campus working to create opportunities and impact for youth with limited access to career and educational opportunities. Stories such as that of Thailand’s Passakorn Pattarapakorn are proof that these efforts touch lives and have the potential to change them for good.??

These are just some of the ways organizations can put their values to work. For Samsung, such initiatives have been key to keeping our objectives purposeful and focused on real world impact, resulting in a virtuous feedback loop.??

Galaxy users, for example, have the opportunity to support the efforts of Generation 17 through the Samsung Global Goals app that has been installed on over 100 million Galaxy smartphones globally. Viewing ads on the app generates donations to causes which are then matched by Samsung, with users also having the option to donate directly through Samsung Pay.?

With such initiatives present across our ecosystem, keeping values at the core of our work has continued to benefit our growth in multifold ways. Ultimately, our people are more driven, our efforts are more collaborative, and our actions are more meaningful in the world at large.?
