What is Purposeful Intent?
What is Purposeful Intent?
We are a global community with the mission to Elevating Everything Work and Workplac
1. We are Global
With 9 events planned for 2023, we want to extend our reach (and learning) to new locations.?
2/2 - Sydney
3/1-3/2 - Boston
4/19-4/20 - New York
5/9 - London
5/30-6/1 - LA
8/3 - Vancouver
9/11 - Amsterdam
10/19 - Austin
11/9 - Miami
The Future of Work differs for individuals, cities, teams, departments, companies, regions and countries and we want to inform and inspire our attendees with a relevance to where they are.
Out offline community (see #4 below) will enable a truly inclusive and global presence augmented by a hybrid approach to education and events
2. Educational
I am going to say publicly what many say privately
The education quality that I have experienced in our industry SUCKS (Antony Slumbers excluded - his stuff is exceptional and where we aspire to be)!!
It is full of old, vested interest content, pay to play material, disconnected thinly veiled sales pitches.
Not to say that there are not incredible facilitators that work magic with what they have.
We are going to totally smash that model - bringing diverse and impactful educators, skills based training and assessments that it will take more than being able to search a PDF to pass.
We will make it relevant to all stakeholders, physically and financially accessible to all
If you are interested in teaching or attending please let me know
3. Diverse
One of the joys of life for me is that it is a melting pot. I love meeting people and hearing their stories, ideas and perspectives. For that reason, the fact that representation matters (and also that diversity drives innovation), we are committed to ensuring diversity across the board.
People is the obvious one and I have publicly committed to inviting at least 50% non-male and 30% people of color to our events. Further we publish those results (in SF, we hit 49% and 40% at registration)
I did notice at my last events the sponsor pool was not so diverse - 32% non-male and 29% non-white - so I brought it up in my opening remarks to ask our sponsors to be thoughtful of that,
I will also ensure my speakers are diverse.
I made a very public commitment last year to no longer participate in "manels" and that will remain (as well as calling out organizations that do).
As I say to anyone who challenges that, it is not hard to find diverse representation and it only enhances the quality of the content (and removes the echo chambers)
We are also ensuring we include different age groups and that under-represented communities get a seat at the table by inviting (and in some cases paying the expenses for) talent in those demographics.
The second area of diversity is the companies people represent - we will not only invite Fortune 100 or companies with mega portfolios, we will invite across the board.
We also are exploring how we support neuro-diversity and inclusion through technology
I am no expert in this - I am a 48 year old white guy.
Anyone with suggestions or ideas please let me know!?
4. Hybrid
Work Foundry Powered by Purposeful Intent, in partnership with Brett Hautop and Dave Bryant will bring virtual engagement - the deep thinking, data analysis and the hands on problem solving on an ongoing asynchronous basis for our end user community to inform the PI in person events with direct insight and feedback on which topics, thought leaders, facilitators and conversations the end user members are looking to have in person.
We are also working on hybrid events with our Ambassador Chris Moeller and Virbela - focus will be on creating virtual environments with a connective tissue to in person and online events so that we can build our community more inclusively.
More to follow on both in 2023!
5. Fun
A big part of our mission at PI is to create incredible networking and memorable experiences, but also to ensure that all throughout the day we have fun!
Life is too short, work does not have to be dull.
As I mentioned in a prior post, I love to make people happy so these pictures really resonate with me.
2022 was an incredible year for the networking and experience side:
16th Hole at the Phoenix Open
Dining in the Desert Under the Stars
Dinner at L’Auberge Del Mar
DMC at PhD New York
Afterhours - Cabra at the Hoxton
领英推荐
A French Connection at Le Select Bistro, Toronto
End of Year Party at Park Tavern, San Francisco
2023 will be event better!!
6. Inspiring
At PI you cannot pay to speak
We bring incredible people to talk about their areas of expertise so you can apply to yours
Duncan Wardle (so good we brought him twice!!)
DMC
Eric Termuende (who will be coming Stateside in 2023!)
Wait for our 2023 lineup - 19 speakers will join the roster!!
7. Accessible
You do not need to sign up for the "Super Early Bird" ticket or the "Buy One Get One Free" because our end user attendees come for free.
And there is no requirement to attend meetings with sponsors in return.
You just get to network, learn and collaborate - be informed and inspired.
We also do not price our sponsors out with accessible rates relative to your organization, including our Start Up Sponsor at a cost of $1,000.
We are building a community not just generating revenue
If you are interested in joining one of our nine events in 2023, please let me know.
8. Valuable
We will provide Research and Advisory on subjects that need highlighting. We created a Workplace Utilization evaluation to give people an unabashed view of that space - I have found over the years the supposedly wizardly squares and other analyst firm reports fell foul of the vested interest too much of our industry is driven by, and price points that were unattainable for many.
Most significantly we are partnering with TapIn (a UK based company whose CEO Milimo Banji spoke at our LA event) to help bring their? Gen Z Black Talent Report to the US.?
When I heard him talk about the 22 per cent of Black Gen Z who have changed their names on job applications to improve their chances of success, compared to only 7 per cent of White Gen Z or the 52 per cent of Black Gen Z women and 37 per cent of non-binary Black Gen Z who do not feel comfortable wearing their natural hair to job interviews, I knew we all had to change the game.
If there is research you are interested in exploring, please reach out.
9. Unique
I often get questions and comments about how our events compare to other more established industry constructs. On the face of it there are some similarities but when you dig in you see them rapidly disappear.
My (purposeful) intent is that the only commonality across our events is the structure:
Keynote to start the day to energize and inspire
Facilitated round tables to share experiences, challenges and build actionable plans, as well as to develop bonds between the attendees
Fireside chat to learn from (my favorite Duncan Wardle phrase) “naive experts” - it gets people to think about application of a skill or approach to their work without spoon feeding (an often vested or paid for and sometimes incorrect) answers - one thing I guarantee is we do not have the answers but we can help you find yours
Unique evening events to further build on connections to help form lasting relationships (through shared experiences)
?In reading “The Art of the Gathering” by Priya Parker (and if you plan any type of event, you should - thanks for the suggestion Rimi Chakraborty ) one thing struck me early:
The concept derived from Japanese tea ceremonies of ichi-go, ichi-e. Literally translated into ichi (one) go (time) ichi (one) e (meeting/encounter), ichi-go ichi-e is an old Japanese proverb that means one opportunity, one encounter.
Every Purposeful Intent event will be unique. New locations, topics, facilitators, sponsors, speakers and experiences.
I want people to remember the specific place and time they met someone because of how unique our events truly are. Also aligning with the book is the purpose we meet - although the outcomes differ, the purpose is always going to be to inform and to inspire. I want people to come away with meaningful and memorable experiences but also meaningful and memorable connections, insights, inspirations and actions.
I cannot wait to kick off our 2023 program in Sydney!!
10. Actionable
We provide actual takeaways generated from our events. Our speakers are always briefed that we want the audience to leave with something that can be actually used/implemented as a result of the events. We additionally bring in expert facilitators to ensure that the roundtables are productive and produce valuable takeaways. For 2023 we are expanding into new topic areas and will be looking for facilitators in areas including:
If you would like to be considered as a facilitator, please let me know.?
A big thank you to?Corinne Murray?and?Omar Ramirez (He/Him)?for extracting the nuggets from '22!!
And a big thank you to all the people that made this happen - our sponsors, attendees and extended team (and so many inspiration people that backed me on this)!
