What Punxsutawney Phil Can Teach Us About Company Culture
Earlier this month, Punxsutawney Phil – Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog – predicted six more weeks of winter. While he doesn’t have the best track record historically (only a 40% accuracy rate), the country was hit with some record cold storms with temperatures reaching into negative double and triple digits. So maybe this year, his weather predictions are spot on! (Note: we San Diegans don’t really comprehend what -45-degrees Fahrenheit means!)
An Important Lesson From Groundhog Day
While the tradition and lore surrounding Groundhog Day, made famous by?Bill Murray’s 1993 movie, is a bit fun and a lot silly, we think it offers a valuable lesson:?don’t get stuck in a boring routine.
None of us want to feel like every day was exactly the same as the last. We thrive on variety and newness. Our brains are wired so we?experience more happiness and feel more resilient when there is something novel that focuses us on the present moment. The same is true for your team.
Make It New For Your Team
If you’re reading this blog, chances are you are interested in making sure your employees have opportunities to connect with each other in easy ways. But planning the same happy hour or Zoom social can feel like Groundhog Day if you don’t sprinkle in variety.
