Psychological resilience is your ability to manage stress efficiently and bounce back quickly to a state of harmony. Resilience exists when you are aware of the factors causing the crisis and take necessary actions to overcome problems and challenges and be strengthened by it.
A resilient person is one
- Who can Cope: It is the use of inner knowledge and skills to overcome setbacks and challenges. You can cope better with stress when you are aware of who you are and what your strengths and weaknesses are. To be optimistic and having a positive self-talk will boost your confidence in facing these adversities.
- Who has Grit: Resilient individuals realize that adversities are a part and parcel of life. They view obstacles as challenges and face them head on. They always look for solutions rather than succumbing to problems. Most importantly they never give up and always find a way out.
- Who makes Sense: When you take experiences both positive and negative as learning lessons and make sense out of your actions, you are being resilient. It is the desire to have a meaningful life by having a sense of purpose and goals for the future.
- Who is Emotionally Intelligent: It is the ability to analyse emotions, understand where it is stemming from and manage it in a way to deal with situations more positively. When you have high emotional intelligence, you’ll seldom feel emotions like anger, disappointment and distress because you’ll know exactly why you are feeling what you are feeling and the meaning behind them.
While some individuals are wired to be resilient, for most of us it’s an acquired skill. The idea is to be aware of our patterns of behavior and mindful in practising resilience in our day-to-day reactions to situations.
