What problem are you focused on solving? (And is it the right one?)

We all tend to become stuck in our ways from time to time. I would argue that we can also become stuck in our ways when viewing certain situations. We can become stuck in the types of problems that we identify and attempt to solve. Instead of perpetuating this cycle of solving the same types of problems in the same types of ways, I invite you to expand your mindset; stand in a different place; consider a different perspective; define a new problem.
What problem are you focused on solving? Is it the right problem for this situation?
This question has been very true for me this week. I'm the type of person who loves to come up with new ideas, new programs, and new ways of doing things. As much fun as this is for me, it can also lead to overwhelm. I have so many options in front of me, but how do I know which one to pursue? When an idea doesn't work out, how should I move forward? What's the next best move? Rather than spin my wheels (which I'm likely to do for a little while), I need to look at the big picture and evaluate the problem that I'm trying to solve. Oftentimes, it's not a new program or idea that I need most, but it's a new problem and a new strategy. It's a new way of framing the situation.
This week, I hope that you take some time to look at the big problems that have dominated your consciousness. Ask yourself the questions below and consider the problem's usefulness. Experiment with new ways of defining and framing the problem. Whether you recommit to an existing problem or rewrite it, I hope that you find the energy and enthusiasm to tackle it in new ways.

1 年Great points, Maura. Einstein is attributed to saying, “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I'd spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.” Taking time to understand the true problem is worth it.
