What ‘Private Proud’ means to me

What ‘Private Proud’ means to me

If you work for PwC, or even if you follow PwC in the social media landscape, you probably know what it means to be #PwCProud : proud to be a values-driven community of solvers who deliver sustained outcomes and build trust. As the leader of PwC’s Private practice of more than 2,500 dedicated audit, tax and consulting professionals, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be #PrivateProud .

I often speak with accounting students and share that when I entered Rutgers University’s accounting program, I knew that my love for math and business would be a strong foundation to a meaningful career, and I was excited to explore how the combination of my interests and education might create a path where I work with so many interesting clients and people. Thanks to the leadership and mentorship from various partners including, John Pope, Brendan Dougher, Mark Simon, Dean Simone, Mitchell Cohen, Kathryn Kaminsky and Mark Mendola, I learned the value of being a critical thinker and that an entrepreneurial spirit and collaboration with others makes leading this team and helping clients navigate through complexity so fulfilling.

Throughout 2022 our team has helped our clients discover opportunities in the midst of economic uncertainty, competition for talent, and complex and fast-changing tax policies. We’ve brought value to our clients in all areas of their business to support their growth strategy. I am #PrivateProud of how our team has helped to keep our clients ahead of the curve and build value in a challenging year.?

It’s an understatement to say that private enterprises are unique. Like public companies, private companies seek quality, efficiency and innovation. They are an important part of capital markets, ranging from family-owned businesses to private equity portfolio companies to some of the world’s largest privately held companies. However, for private company leaders, their business is personal. This requires a skill set that goes beyond technical tax or audit expertise – it requires the ability to listen and communicate well to deeply understand our clients’ businesses and the needs of the owners. When clients work with PwC Private, they get the power of the entire firm scaled to fit the needs of a private company. We know our clients value relationships with those who can help them build trust, longevity and authenticity.?

To me, #PrivateProud reflects the world of opportunity we have working with private companies. PwC Private team members work with clients across different sectors, including sports and entertainment, industrial manufacturing, technology and retail, and have the ability to grow their career in assurance, tax and consulting. They gain broader exposure to clients’ business challenges and work with the company’s leadership and owners in developing solutions from start to finish. Because we believe in the power of multidisciplinary experience and perspectives, we provide our team members with the training to support all types of companies in a variety of industries, which is valuable and foundational to any career path they ultimately select. The result: our team provides holistic solutions for clients’ business, vision and competitive landscape – and at the pace and scale they need.

When I reflect on what it means to be #PrivateProud , it’s about PwC’s team of incredible professionals who collaborate every day, bringing their skills and passion to help private company clients achieve their business goals in a dynamic and competitive market. It’s a testament to the PwC Private team’s culture of camaraderie and entrepreneurship. And as we continue into this year of uncertainty, I am #PrivateProud to lead our Private business and excited to see my team continue to solve our clients’ great challenges.

Fabulous job, Shawn. Keep up the great work. And, am so happy to see how far we have all come in this venture. And, a great statement of quals for the practice.
