What is Principle-Centered Leadership

Being a principle-centered leader is a two-step process. First, it is defining the timeless, universal values that will guide you, individually and organizationally. Second, it is aligning your actions and decisions with that set of core values.

Why It Matters

Timeless values (principles) are the unmovable rocks that we must anchor ourselves to if we want to be reliable, trustworthy, dependable, and live a highly productive life. If we choose to be true to those values, no matter how strong the winds and storms of life, then we develop confidence in our character, and so do those around us. This is just as true for an organization as an individual.

The "How"

Define the timeless values that guide and define you or your organization and strive to always align your actions with those values, no matter the circumstance (example from the BYB Custom Planner below).

Here's how:

• Take out a piece of paper and write down your core values.
• On the same piece of paper, identify which value you do well at. Circle it.
• Now, find the value that you’d like to improve at, and circle that as well
• Develop a simple "action plan" to improve at that core value!
• Include your "key actions" in your weekly pre-week planning.
• Be sure to capture your core values in a written out "values statement" so they're always front of mind; or, include them in your custom planner's vision and values template).

Wrapping Up

What guides your thoughts, decisions, and actions, individually and organizationally? Define the timeless values -- the principles -- that can act as a guiding compass for your decisions and actions. Include these core values in your personal or organizational "values statement." Align your life with those values. That's becoming your best!
