What is Presentation Excellence?

In a world full of video calls and all kinds of virtual communication the ability to present efficiently has never been so important. ???

As part of our Lunch and Learn sessions at Mercury Filmworks we recently had the pleasure of welcoming Anil Dilawri , Managing Director of Save it like Sully , to give a talk focused on presentation excellence.

Here are nine takeaways from Anil’s fantastic session:

1?? What is a presentation? It can be anything from 1 to 2 people on a video call, to standing on stage presenting to 500 people and everything in between.

2?? Normalize the apprehension around presenting by acknowledging that our personal credibility is on the line. This is why it feels so important on a personal level!

3?? Organization – spend 10min on a clear structure in a note taking tool, not in PowerPoint. Organization brings structure, focus, and control to a presentation.

4?? Structure – Start with 3 or 4 key points, and decide how you want to end (summary, Call to action, see you soon, example that delivers on the promise of your presentation).

5?? Delivery and slides – Slides should work for you and not against you. Make sure you separate any presentation document and the visual support for your presentation. Don’t try and jam everything into one document.

6?? Audience analysis - Think about who is going to be there? How many people will there be? What are their positive and negative bias? What are the questions they may ask? Be prepared for anything that comes your way.

7?? Technical Preparation – Show up early and test everything beforehand.

8?? Strategic practice – Set up 20 minute practice sessions at least 3 or 4 times before the presentation. This is about building comfort and confidence, not about perfection!

9?? End strongly – A great way to finish is with a story that summarizes the content presented and demonstrates some of the principals or information you touched on.?
