What Prashant taught me about the Future of Work

Making work better and making work matter.
During the day, gardeners Prashant and Lambodhar work in the grounds of this hotel in Bhubaneswar located in India’s eastern state of Odisha where we recently visited.
But before they begin their days work they spend just 30 minutes creating the hotels signature decor in the front lobby, using flower petals and other natural garden fragments to produce elaborate displays in pots of water. More common in Asia these arrangements of floating flowers and foliage are a traditional form of decorative respect towards nature and a sign of welcome to visitors.
Every day a new exquisite design appreciated and admired by every single hotel guest as they pass in and out of the hotel.?
It was such a simple example of giving (all) employees the opportunity, respect and autonomy to express their own personal skills and creativity outside the traditional boundaries of their job.
And at the same time providing a direct and visible impact and link to customer value through every and any employee.? A good lesson for the skills-based future of work??
The more experienced Prashant (pictured below) was also clearly training Lambodhar on the delicate art form, passing on an additional skill to his colleague to help him succeed and grow in this job and into the future. ?
Thank you Prashant and Lambodhar for a reminder of how, with a little thought, we can make work better and make work matter for everyone.
(apologies for the poor quality pics!)

8 个月Kevin Empey Wow, they obviously take great pride in their work. And, I really like the focus on creating artwork that also has meaning for customers/guests! Great lesson for all of us ... find meaning in the work we do, especially how it builds value for others.
