What to Practice?

When 50% or greater strokes are from putting, it is an easy answer: putting. But maybe not any putting.

Try this: Keep your own scorecard. Noting the following on each line:

  • Score
  • Approach club.
  • Chip? Which Club? Put an S if it was a sand shot.
  • Putt 1 - from how far? (one stride is 2.25-3 yards - count them out)
  • Putt 2 - from how far?
  • Putt 3 - from how far?

A successful chip should result in one putt or a maximum of 2 putts.

If you are chipping frequently, consider spending more practice time with the approach clubs, unless they are long irons, hybrids or fairway woods. If long shots are causing extra strokes, maybe you need to rethink your strategy.

Too many 3 putts following a chip? Then practice your chip shots from a variety of lies, distances from the hole and with a variety of clubs: 7 iron -sw.

Are you missing the short putts? Get someone to video your stance and stroke, I can almost guarantee you are moving at impact. Remember: listen for the ball to drop, never watch it roll in.

Are you missing medium putts? Work on your 3 footers in concentric circles around the cup and slowly work out 6" at a time.

If long putts ruin your score, work on your 3 footers and spend most of your time developing a feel for distance.
