What to Pitch the Media in June

What to Pitch the Media in June

By planning out your monthly pitching calendar, you are much more likely to have success.

Last month, my client Tami, a Certified Happiness Expert, pitched National Smile Day on May 31st, and landed on NBC in Miami.

June is filled with significant events and observances that offer numerous opportunities for professionals to engage with the media. As we move into summer, these topics are a perfect chance to position yourself as an expert and gain media coverage.

Father's Day: Celebrating Dads and Male Mentors

Father's Day, celebrated on June 17th is a prime opportunity to highlight stories that honor fathers and male mentors. If you are a professional in the fields of family therapy, parenting, or men's health, you can pitch articles or segments on the evolving role of fathers in modern families, mental health tips for dads, or unique Father's Day gift ideas. Business leaders and entrepreneurs can share personal stories about balancing fatherhood and career, or advice on how companies can create father-friendly workplaces.

National Safety Month: Promoting Workplace and Personal Safety

June is National Safety Month, a campaign spearheaded by the National Safety Council to promote safety awareness. As a safety expert, HR professional, or business leader, you can offer valuable insights on creating safer work environments, emergency preparedness, and mental health in the workplace. Pitching these topics to the media not only positions you as a thought leader but also aligns your brand with the critical issue of safety.

Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom and African American Culture

Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is a time for reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and achievements. Diversity and inclusion consultants, educators, and community leaders can pitch stories on the historical significance of Juneteenth, how organizations can honor the day, and the ongoing fight for racial equality.

Graduation: Celebrating Academic Milestones

June marks graduation season, a time when students transition from academia to the professional world. Career coaches, educational consultants, financial experts, and business leaders can provide valuable advice to recent graduates on job hunting, navigating the early stages of their careers, finances, and leveraging social media for professional growth. Highlighting your expertise in these areas can attract media attention and offer much-needed guidance to new graduates.

You can also get creative as I did last month when I was hosting my niece's graduation party, I pitched that idea for a TV segment and was booked for planning the perfect graduation party.

International Yoga Day: Embracing Wellness and Mindfulness

International Yoga Day, celebrated on June 21st, emphasizes the importance of yoga in promoting physical and mental well-being. Fitness trainers, wellness coaches, and mental health professionals can pitch stories on the benefits of yoga, how to incorporate yoga into a busy lifestyle, and the intersection of yoga and mental health. This observance provides an excellent platform to discuss holistic health and the importance of mindfulness in the workplace.

Pride Month: Celebrating LGBTQ+ Diversity and Inclusion

June is also Pride Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and advocating for equal rights and acceptance. This month is an excellent opportunity for diversity and inclusion experts, community leaders, and advocates to pitch stories on the progress and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

To effectively pitch these topics to the media, consider the following tips:

- Be Timely: Ensure your pitch is relevant to current events and seasonal trends. Media outlets are more likely to cover stories that align with their editorial calendar.

- Be Authentic: Share personal stories or unique insights that showcase your expertise and passion for the topic.

- Be Clear and Concise: Craft a compelling pitch that clearly outlines the story idea, why it is relevant, and how it will benefit the audience.

- Provide Value: Offer practical tips, data, and resources that can help the audience. Media outlets appreciate pitches that provide tangible value to their readers or viewers.

By strategically leveraging these June observances, you can position yourself as an expert in your field and secure valuable media coverage. If you need help, check out my course on planning your Annual Media Pitching Calendar.
